Amber's actions
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by opting into paperless billing and ending unwanted subscriptions.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Go PaperlessReducing your paper mail can be such a freeing action to take -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?
Amber Newton 10/10/2018 2:06 PMI always go paperless when given the option. One thing I find frustrating is the amount of junk mail I have to throw away (by which I mean recycle, but still) coming from credit card and loan offers. Not sure how to combat that, though... -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Amber Newton 10/10/2018 2:01 PMI've recently made a habit of asking merchants to leave out carb-heavy foods I am not eating that are usually included with a meal, like rice or bread. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles serve an important role in places for health and safety, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. Can you identify the barriers in making this a new habit? How can you set yourself up for success in making this a permanent change?
Amber Newton 10/08/2018 9:40 AMIt's challenging when traveling to avoid buying disposable water bottles. I will try to remember to pack a reusable bottle when taking a trip.-
Nancy Koppy 10/08/2018 10:20 AMI can't tell you how sad I was to see the gazillions of empty plastic water bottles when I was traveling through Europe. I'm glad you took this particular challenge. I don't drink much water but I use my reusable coffee mug.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reuseable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to establish this a successful habit?
Amber Newton 10/03/2018 9:54 AMI usually try to taking things out by hand and/or in my purse. They usually also have inexpensive reusable bags for sale. I try to always keep a reusable bag in my purse as a way to keep up a successful habit. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Power Down the ComputerWhat are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?
Amber Newton 10/03/2018 9:41 AMTurn off lights and other electronic devices when not in use. Use the fireplace instead of electronic heat. Open windows and use fans instead of using our window AC unit. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Turn it offHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Amber Newton 10/03/2018 9:38 AMPortland General Electric generates electricity through a mixture of purchased power, natural gas, coal, hydro and wind. Natural gas and coal negatively effect the environment (climate change, ozone layer, etc.) and therefore negatively effect animals and humans. Wind turbines and power lines can negatively effect birds in the area.
