Reduce Single-Use Disposables

Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Healthy Sleep
Consider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?

My sleeping patterns vary, but consistently going to bed earlier and getting up earlier has made my days more productive and active. I feel healthier and more energized than I did previously.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Whole Foods Diet
Michael Pollan states that "it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor." What are your thoughts on this?

I think that what you put into your body is what you will get out of it. We should be fueling our bodies with the best energy, and avoid consumption that can have negative impacts on that system.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Personal Waste Audit
Why is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?

People do not always like to take responsibility for their actions. When they dispose of something it is out of mind and out of sight. Our society is based off of consumption. That is how we find our GDP, but it does not measure the effects "consumption" has on the environment. In the near future I hope we realize that consumption is not everything.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Bringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

On Tuesday's and Thursday's I tend to get a to-go meal at the Sparty's Market in my work building. I try to avoid the plastic from the mixed salads, but it is very frustrating that I cannot bring my own containers. I am trying to think of innovated ways of avoiding this waste, but I am on a meal plan and those lunches count as a swipe.

I join the challenge because, I know it is important to recognize our consumption habitats. The goal of these competitions is to create ways on how we can change our impact.

Avoiding riding the bus and walking today was very beneficial and allowed me to spend more time outside.

The mindless consumption we have on a daily basis that is not being addressed as harshly as it should be. We should be protecting our resources and thinking critically of our consumption.
