It's crazy how taking a little time to focus on being more health can change the way you view things around you. Taking notice of all the things in this world that are not healthy or good for the environment. It really makes you stop and think! If only we all just took a little more time to be informed maybe we would all be happier, healthier people.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Weekly Meal Planning
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?

It really doesn't surprise me that we throw out that much food. Although it does make me sad knowing that there are people out there who don't have food and here we are over buying and forgetting about food and ending up letting it go bad so it gets thrown away. This also pairs up with the over eating that often happens in the US as well. We don't plan our meals and we eat out often so we end up wasting food as well as eating poorly. Its a sad cycle. If I had an extra $1,500 a year our family would pay off some debt or set it aside in our savings. Hopefully will save some money this year being more aware and meal planning.

Health Audit Toxic Cleaning Products in my Home
To what extent do you believe that environmental factors contribute to your own health or issues with health?

It feels great to be informed and know what is in the things that I am using in my home. Knowing that is in my cleaners helps me to be aware of how they affect my health and the health of my family!

Doing meal planning is something my husband and I have been meaning to do for a while and its so nice to actually take the steps to do it. I feel like we end up wasting a lot and realizing that we don't have enough room to store our food because we end up over buying. There's no worse feeling then throwing food away when you know that there are people out there who struggle to afford food!

You have taken the first step and realized that food is wasted.  That's awesome!  Now you can tackle the problem in your home.  We have a small sign in our refrigerator that reads, "EAT THIS NEXT" and we move it around and it ends up saving us some wastefulness. Wishing you good luck.

It's great to feel like I am making changes that are making an impact. One greener choice at a time!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Use Public Transit
The US spends roughly 20% of its federal budget on defense. In contrast, 2% goes to education, 20% goes to social security and 3% goes to transportation infrastructure. Do these numbers surprise you at all? Why or why not?

    Julie Sheets 10/18/2018 8:06 AM
I have used public transportation in the past but had forgotten until I began using it again recently that so many people commute on it every day. Regardless of the reason being that they don't have a car, that works too far to walk or ride a bike or that it's less expensive to ride the max/bus then to park. All those riding our doing two major things. They're making it to work/school and they are producing less CO2 by not driving. I know for me its the fact that I don't have a car that I ride. But when you add up the cost to get a car, insurance, gas, parking and the cost to maintain it you realized just how cost effective riding on public transportation really is!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Exercise Daily
How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

    Julie Sheets's avatar
    Julie Sheets 10/18/2018 8:00 AM
You forget how important being active is not only for you to have good health but also for you to feel good. I have noticed that I don't mind my morning work to the max as much anymore now that I have gotten into a routine of being more active like using the stairs to go up to the 15 floor for lunch/breaks. It's the little things that make a big difference!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Happiness
How does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?

I am reminded daily of all the good things in my life and how I am making a choice to be a happier healthier person. I notice that I really enjoy taking a few minutes in the morning to reflect and plan to continuing doing this even after the challenge is over. Even if I am just writing down one thing a day that I am grateful for or that I am happy/excited about.
