I know I kind of messed up the beginning of this challenge....but now I feel I truly learned some great earth-friendly habits.

You didn't screw it up. Listen to your inner Mr. Miyagi: If it comes from inside, there can be no wrong.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Compost Food Waste
New to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? Do you know how your compost will be used and the benefits it has on the environment?

We recently moved to a neighborhood that does not collect food compost, so we had to find other ways to do it. I now throw my coffee grounds in the backyard. My wife and collect the food waster and take it to a compost facility. We are also reaching out to the city of Beaverton about implementing composting like Portland does.

Tigard hasn't done it yet either. Hmmm.

I`m surprised Beaverton hasn`t done this yet. Portland, Milwaukie, Lake Oswego, Forest Grove and one other already collect food scraps successfully. I hope all cities in the area start doing it soon...
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles serve an important role in places for health and safety, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. Can you identify the barriers in making this a new habit? How can you set yourself up for success in making this a permanent change?

My wife and I both have numerous reusable water containers. We bring them everywhere, so we are not tempted to buy bottled water. We also have a Brita pitcher to filter the water. Work, gym, running errands...we have our reusable bottles with us.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Choose Two-Sided Printing
Choosing two-sided printing can be an easy adjustment on your computer settings. How can you help others make this same switch? Can it be encouraged company wide?

I will make sure every member of my team is doing.I am also encouraging not to print at all unless absolutely necessary.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Go Paperless
Reducing your paper mail can be such a freeing action to take -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?

I like getting rid of clutter anyway, so reducing paper is keeping my work space clean. I have been doing more presentations that do not include paper. All of the information is on the the screen and if anyone wants a copy, I email it to them.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Visit a Waste Management Facility
Field trip! What a fun way to learn about our impact and consumption! What facility did you visit? What did you learn? Did you take anyone with you?

Since we just moved into an older home, we have had a lot of items to get rid of...from exercise equipment to a toilet to old carpet. It takes a minute to make sure you dispose of each item properly and at the right facility. My wife and I went to the recycling facility in Aloha to get rid of all of the moving materials.

This is my first time doing this event and I just realized I wasn't checking in properly. I apologize. I have been doing my challenges, but it won't let me check-in that far back.

Go to the bottom of your dashboard and you`ll see today circled. Click on any one of the dates not checked off and fill in what challenges you completed for the day. Does that make sense?
