Alissa Ambacher 10/23/2018 6:31 AMI missed a day of checking in! Prepping for my wedding this weekend was no joke. It felt like there was an endless list of things to do. Being so busy with the wedding had some positives though! I was too busy to watch TV, and loading the car, setting up the venue, and, of course, dancing all night was great exercise! My wedding was at a nature center, so I got to spend lots of time outside!-
Kristin Infanti 10/24/2018 9:06 AMCongrats Alissa! -
Carey Compton 10/23/2018 6:31 PMCONGRATULATIONS ALISSA!!! That is so exciting. Wishing you many years of peaceful marriage...of course it's not all peaceful because then you won't appreciate the peaceful ones. -
Louisa Lubiak 10/23/2018 6:45 AMCongratulations Alissa! Getting married is a challenge in and of itself - How cool that you held the wedding at a nature center!

Alissa Ambacher 10/10/2018 5:57 AMI decided to add another daily action: eating at least 1 meal per day that is free of processed foods. I think that how I choose to define a processed food will be the key to success here. For example, technically frozen produce is processed, but if I'm buying just straight up frozen fruits and vegetables (no added sugars, sauces, seasonings, etc.) then it should not count as a processed food. I think that the most important thing when eating any food is to avoid added sugars and flavorings that pack on calories. My goal is to eat fewer prepared items, and increase fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and decrease added sugars. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Whole Foods DietMichael Pollan states that "it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor." What are your thoughts on this?
Alissa Ambacher 10/10/2018 5:49 AMI think this is true to an extent. I think it's detrimental to believe that all ailments can be cured by a healthier diet, although a healthy diet can certainly help. Overall, the better we treat our bodies, the better we will feel, but that can't fix everything or prevent every illness. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Exercise DailyHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
Alissa Ambacher 10/10/2018 5:46 AMI can incorporate spending time with friends while exercising by inviting a friend to go on a bike ride or hike. Before I moved, I used to workout on the trails near my house by running, climbing trees, jumping over logs, and sloshing through streams. It would be great to find a place similar to that near where I live now. When you're having fun working out in nature, it doesn't even feel like a chore! -
Alissa Ambacher 10/09/2018 6:01 AMThis weekend was a whirlwind! I tabled all day at a community festival with the Environmental Commission on Saturday, and Sunday and Monday were spent doing wedding prep. I didn't have as much time as I would have liked to go for a hike, and by the time I was done catching up on chores around the house, writing thank you cards, buying stuff for the wedding, and going food shopping I definitely chose to veg out in front of the TV instead of doing something else. I would like to watch less TV this week and get outside more. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Go for a Daily WalkHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
Alissa Ambacher 10/05/2018 10:59 AMWhen I'm moving more slowly I notice so much more. I saw several mushrooms sprouting in an empty flower bed. I also saw a type of acorn I hadn't seen before. I use my senses so much more when I walk. -
Alissa Ambacher 10/04/2018 12:00 PMI'm hoping to get out for a walk today (I know the dog appreciates it!). It can be hard when my schedule always seems so full! I figure if it's the first thing I do when I get home I'll be able to focus better on the other things have I have to do tonight.-
Nicole Kozlowski 10/05/2018 5:20 AMAhhh..... it was just SO beautiful yesterday! I hope you were able to take that walk! The crisp fall air is just delightful :-)

REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Less Screen TimeWhat did you notice in implementing this challenge? Was it hard to choose other activities over screen time? How did you decide to spend your time?
Alissa Ambacher 10/04/2018 6:18 AMIt can be hard sometimes to not be on my phone or watch TV mindlessly. I had a screen-free dinner and did some stuff around the house that needed to get done instead of watching TV.-
Louisa Lubiak 10/04/2018 8:47 AMAlissa, you're off to a great start! It's amazing what one can accomplish with time reclaimed by taking yourself off "autopilot". Keep up the good work!

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth HappinessHow does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?
Alissa Ambacher 10/03/2018 5:44 AMIt is so easy to get caught up in little things that don't matter, and it can wreck your whole day, and the moods of those around you! Remembering what I have, and being grateful for it, keeps me positively motivated to improve other people's lives too. -
Alissa Ambacher 10/02/2018 6:49 AMI'm excited to start the challenges tomorrow!
