Catherine Rose 10/19/2018 1:12 PMDidn't manage to avoid processed food today! Jelly babies, Co-op ravioli, jar of pesto. But I have foraged a lot - lots of walnuts a couple of days ago and mushrooms on this morning's dog walk which I then had for breakfast! -
Catherine Rose 10/11/2018 10:38 AMFeeling slightly frustrated. I bought an LED lightbulb but I can't find where to put it. It's far too bright for anywhere in my house. I moght have to swap it or give it away.-
Catherine Rose 10/14/2018 2:48 AMYes please Hilarie. I'll check. Hope you see this message - there's no reply button on your message that I can see. Cx -

Catherine Rose 10/06/2018 2:57 PMThe thing about avoiding processed food is bothering me. I mean, i made a triffic soup today from fresh veggies, but I used Marigold veggie stock in it - which is surely a processed food? And I mean, butter, milk, ground almonds, yoghurt, flour - they've all been processed. I suppose I need to re-read whether there's a definition somewhere...-
HILARIE BOWMAN 10/09/2018 2:38 PMMaybe it could be under 10% of ingredients are processed for eg the veggie soup. And no additives for say butter and yoghurt ,

REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Go for a Daily WalkHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
Catherine Rose 10/04/2018 7:52 AMI don't drive in my town - I have to drive to get out of it, as the bus service is very poor. So I know my town very well as a walker. But my main walking is taking the dog rounds the fields by the river, walking with friends. It's a way of keeping yourself close to nature and the weather, watching the rise and fall of the river levels, experiencing the quality of the ground beneath your feet (wet or dry), seeing the wildlife come and go, picking up nuts and picking fruit, but also doing quite a lot of litter-picking, especially in the summer.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhat do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than in other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?
Catherine Rose 10/04/2018 7:49 AMI'm not in North America. however I think one aspect of eating a lot of meat is that it's seen as macho. Some men don't like other men to be vegetarian or vegan, or even to choose a diet that is lower in meat.
In my own home, my husband doesn't consider dinner to be dinner unless it has meat or fish in it (though he will happily eat vegetarian meals for other mealtimes). I think that's a hangover from his childhood in wartime and post-war Britain when meat was scarce. It's certainly not him being macho, which I'm happy to say is something he doesn't do. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Zero-Waste CookingIn North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?
Catherine Rose 10/04/2018 7:47 AMI wonder whether I'm doing this right, as in a zero-waste meal I think I include putting stalks etc into the compost. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Turn it offHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Catherine Rose 10/04/2018 7:46 AMI wish I could do more on this. I have solar panels and I use solar-powering lights for some of the time, and I have a solar cooker which i use when it's sunny. I'd love our local community to get together to create community energy, e.g. by turbines on the weir in our river, and solar panels on housing. I suppose I should start it up myself!-
HILARIE BOWMAN 10/09/2018 2:41 PMBristol Energy was set up for the local community and they now produce 15% of their gas from Bristol sewage!

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Whole Foods DietMichael Pollan states that "it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor." What are your thoughts on this?
Catherine Rose 10/04/2018 7:45 AMI actually didn't pay anyone for my vegan meal today. It consisted of nuts which I gathered from a local walnut tree and a copse of hazel that my neighbour lets me forage, and an apple that a fellow allotment-holder gave me yesterday. So my grocer and farmer were mother nature and two good friends! But I agree that good diet must promote health.
