First Nations University Feed

BACK TO TEAM PAGE

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Car Share
Take a moment to think of places you frequent often (work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?

I can easily schedule driving to the grocery store as a carpool and actually do that right now for friends.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Exercise Daily
How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

One could always workout with a partner or go jogging together and enjoy that time being active and social.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Healthy Sleep
Consider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?

I sleep about 7-8 hours a night but 8 is where I want to be consistent. It's a matter of obeying your body patterns and when you get tired - which for me is around 10:30 or 11:00. For me, its a matter of discipline and being in bed at that time or starting to get my rest.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Meet My Neighbors
In what ways can you create more real, face-to-face interactions with friends — or strangers — each week?

I hang out with the students at school regularly and sometimes meet people at the gym and have interactions about the activities.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles serve an important role in places for health and safety, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. Can you identify the barriers in making this a new habit? How can you set yourself up for success in making this a permanent change?

The key is carrying a water bottle with you wherever you go - at work and in the car mainly. Making this a habit will stop people from buying plastic water bottles but even then, ensure to recycle what you buy.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

I think its a matter of being mindful of what waste you have in your house. I recycle everything when it is plastic, paper or cardboard. I usually only use maybe 1.5 small garbage bags a week. I could start refusing to use plastic shopping bags but even those get reused for a daycare and for work. I repair things I can reuse and then eventually recycle if possible.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reuseable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to establish this a successful habit?

If I don't have a can always buy one but I have three in my car so that's not a problem - I carry them with me. However, I would use a cart if there were no bag options.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Choose Two-Sided Printing
Choosing two-sided printing can be an easy adjustment on your computer settings. How can you help others make this same switch? Can it be encouraged company wide?

We have an option in our printing settings for this and I always use this on bigger print jobs. I can ask others to be mindful of the paper we are using when we print. I believe the idea should be encouraged company wide.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Happiness
How does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?

I keep a diary to track my decisions and make sure I am doing things that make me happy. It helps remind me about how good my life is and how joyful it can be - this spills over to interactions with students and staff making the work environment that much healthier.
