    Simplicity Limit Social Media
Social media is a great way to keep us connected with loved ones, makes us laugh, and helps us to learn new things. It can also take more time than we realize or intend to give. After doing this action for a few days now, how do you feel? What do you notice?

I have been more tentative to the world around me instead of on social media. Never realized how much time I spent on social media!

This has really made a difference in my day to day. I now use meditation as a calming mechanism.

I went to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens fall plant sale yesterday! I was able to pick up a lot of native plant species that also support local pollinators. I’m super excited to establish these in my yard! I was also able to pick up some herbs, so that I can jumpstart an herb garden:)

The next step in saving water is for me to reduce the amount of water that I use when I brush my teeth. I have a bad habit of leaving the water on when I brush my teeth and it is unnecessary.

    Nature Explore My Area
How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?

When you only spend time indoors you aren’t as aware of what all is around you. By exploring the areas around you it helps you to discover new things in your area.

Water Say No to Plastic Straws
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

I use a lot of straws when I eat out, I can replace plastic straws with either a reusable metal or plastic straw. I can also just refuse straws and drink straight from the cup instead, which is an easier alternative.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

When I am stressed I spend time outside and it helps me to relax. I think that as people spend more and more time outside that nature will be forgotten and replaced by technology.

    Health Support Pollution Reduction
What environmental factors affect human health in your region, and how do they affect it?

Air pollution and water pollution are the main environmental factors that affects the human health in my area. The air pollution comes from car exhaust and factory pollutants. Factory pollutants also affect local water ways. They do not affect the drinking water due to water treatment plants, but they do effect whether or not a Water way is safe to swim in. Humans are the very reasons why these issues exist in our region and they are the ones who cause health issues in the human population.

Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles serve an important role in places for health and safety, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. Can you identify the barriers in making this a new habit? How can you set yourself up for success in making this a permanent change?

It all has to do with peoples risk perception of tap water. Many see tap water as unsafe when in actuality it is very treated. There is  also a social construct that bottled water is better than tap water and that it taste better. The best way to make this successful is to not buy any bottled water and just rely on the water from the tap. If there is no bottled water around then one has no choice but to use tap water.
