The Green Society at UTSA Feed

BACK TO TEAM PAGE

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

I try to eat healthy and plenty, whenever I feel I'm getting sick I try to slow down and drink tea or orange juice and it usually helps, I avoid situations that could harm me, I am very into skin care so I do routines to exfoliate, etc. I try to exercise, whether it is going to the gym, or just walking places if I can. I try to be close to nature because I feel it really helps make you feel good

What is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?

Many people think that just eating veggies doesn’t have it’s consequences. But truthfully, the mass production of crops sometimes leaves acres of land completed stripped of their nutrients. Now, the CO2 and methane emissions from the American meat production has definitely left a mark on the Earth as well, but I wish growing vegetables (local farmers do) cured the land of our pollutants.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water Eco-friendly Gardening
What are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.

San Antonio suffers from drought and then when the rains come... it pours for days causing major flooding. The communities in the heart of downtown probably have it the worst. The city's infrastructure was built in the hill country with tons of impermeable concrete and gutters overwhelmed with water.

I came across this question a couple weeks back and I wish I hadn't (ignorance is bliss? lol) Not having coffee period would be the most sustainable choice, but for now we can start small and ask for it with non-dairy milk and in your own container. The Earth will appreciate it a latte. (honestly I'm just here to make myself feel better and laugh)

It wasn't until the end of last year that trash became an overwhelming thought in my head. I asked my family to keep their cardboard, paper, and plastic for a couple of weeks until I came home. We then drove for 10 minutes and were able to recycle 60lbs of different materials. (and we got a couple dollars out of it!) This is the picture of Brownsville Scrap Paper. Looking at it is so reminiscent of the movie Wall-E. Most of us watched that movie, contemplated it for a second, and moved on. We were little, but we should know better now.

It's easy to do the Power Down challenge now that everything in my room is on a power strip. But I did forget to turn it off on weekends.

The challenge has made me realize many things I wasn't aware of before, and it encourages me to do stuff I could've done before to reduce waste, save water, eat healthier, etc. It is pretty simple, I feel people just have to get a little help from a challenge like this to start doing what could do a big difference

Buy from local farmers, make my own bread to reduce plastic waste, buy bulk foods (pasta, beans, rice, spices, condiments...)
